DJ Lance Lockarm.  He took his web zone down like 4 years ago, tracks are all gone.  This is one of his best.

This episode is not safe for… watercoolers? Adam and Zac invade their step sister podcast and are subject to intense grilling and smoking with mesquite flavor. If you listen carefully, you can hear Shannon’s vagina dry up when we start talking about video games.

Movie Diary

the post in which I write about movies I have recently watched.

The Campaign

Local elections, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis. Some pretty low hanging fruit here on the comedy vine and this movie to its credit made the most of it.  Contrary to my expectations, Ferrell was not playing a version of his “W” but instead more of a John Edwards type.  They beat you over the head with how money is running politics, and even though that is surely true, it could’ve been done without the satire of the Koch brothers.  Biggest laugh comes in the credits sequence when the Dylan McDermott character uses the alias “Dermot Mulroney.”

Lincoln

Tommy Lee Jones delivers more laughs than either of The Campaign’s stars, and the movie at large has more to say about today’s politics and back door dealing.  Perhaps an unfair comparison, but I don’t mind making it.

Liberal Arts

The majority cast of TV’s “How I Met Your Mother” have good to great careers in my opinion.  The exception has to be the star Josh Radnor.  He prefers to write, direct, and star in independant movies.  I gotta give him credit, he could turn his CBS stardom into a big paycheck in summer romcoms and buddy movies with Bradley Cooper, but instead he does what he really wants to do.  Which is why it is disappointing that this movie was a real bore.  Like my wife and I literally fell asleep in the middle of it.  We finished it another night but only after debating whether it was worth finishing. There was no payoff.

The Giant Mechanical Man

By comparison, here is another movie staring a beloved TV actor that wants to address the 30 something malaise and minutiae. Maybe I just have slightly more affection for Jenna Fischer.  I can relate anyway to taking a job you’re overqualified for because you can’t keep it together enough to do the job you know you should have.  The Topher Grace character was so obnoxiously terrible and so obviously full of shit it broke the movie ever time he reappeared because I couldn’t believe that anyone thought he was OK.  Much of the rest of the movie was enjoyable though.  The post credits sequence was far too tacked on.  Should have stopped when it faded to black.

Brave

Have rarely been disappointed by Pixar. This was one of their more enjoyable tales.  If they stick to original content and avoid sequels, they’ll stay the best in my book.  I’ll just continue to avoid the sequels anyway. Fine music, amazing visuals, fairy tale story, and a strong mother/daughter screen relationship.  This one we’ll revisit when my daughter is a little older.

Episode%20Three

Adam and Zac have a conversation with Brad about Boston. This was recorded on Wednesday night, April 17, two days after the Marathon Bombing. We don’t have standard show format anyway, but this is very different just the same. There are still some laughs, and it is still worth listening to. Thanks.

Zac, Adam, and Ernie are joined by Mike Miksch. Who they don’t know all that well and probably should have taken greater lengths to learn about before hand instead of finding out who he is on the air.

TV Diary

What I’m watching on TV all day.  ALL DAY, SON.

I’m taking a page right out of the book of narrowcast here, but he created a template that is easier to follow than what I used to do.

New Girl

Schmidt.  Schmidt Schmidt Schmidt.  Nick and Winston and yes, even Jess, are all good reasons to watch this show.  But Schmidt is clearly the Kramer of this group.  My Seinfeld comparison doesn’t end there though, since I think Zooey’s Jess is an integral part of the show that keeps it all together just like Jerry did, but you tune in for the friends more than the title character each week.  Winston seems a bit under used but when he is doing something other than playing the straight man foil against Nick or Schmidt’s antics each week, he more than earns his place on this show.

I honestly thing New Girl is one of the if not THE funniest shows on TV right now.  Its at Workaholics level.  Its at Parks & Rec level.  Its HILARIOUS.

Duck Tales

I’ve watched the first 65 episodes via Amazon Prime over the last 2 weeks and am shocked at how well it holds up.  I kinda talked about it on the most recent NTR podcast so I’ll leave it there.

The Americans

I couldn’t tell you why I’m able to keep up with this series while a dozen other hour long cable series seem to elude me.  I guess I miss Alias and saw a new show about spies and jumped right in.  I kinda like that I’m not rooting for anyone here.  I know thats old hat for cable series, but like I said, I never seem to make time for those shows before.  Russian spies are not the good guys.  The FBI agent is not the good guy.  Their leaders are not the good guys either.

Bob’s Burgers

Did I say New Girl was the funniest show?  Maybe just live action.  The recent “Mad Pooper” episode was inspired.  The side plot of Gene turning into Bob was worthy of holding a show on its own.

Top Gear

I appreciate that the new episodes from the BBC are airing here on BBC America only a week later. But considering how many episodes I’ve missed over the years, I still like watching the old ones.  I’m not sure if this is a comedy show or a reality series or a talk show or news or whatever, but it is definitely on TV and doesn’t require a lot of car knowledge to jump in and really enjoy.  Mad challenges, races, verbose car reviews, and gorgeous cinematography.

Rainy day TV.

Quality gender swap of Iron Man to Iron Maiden.

Game Diary

I used to write about games I played a lot more than I do now, and I’ll probably never write professionally like that again, but since I still play and I still have stuff to say I might as well write it down informally.

Halo 4

Last night my friend Ernie and I started a Halo 4 lobby and filled the room with unmanned controllers.  Is this cheating?  The goal was to get as many of our unearned achievements as we could.  Xbox 360 Achievements can be some real bullshit as you may well know, going beyond it being an actual “achievement” and becoming something you do by accident or complete luck.  Halo 3 had one called “2 for1” where in a free for all match you knock out 2 guys with ONE laser shot.  This is FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE and remains my one unearned point from that game.  So when Ernie proposed that we cut down our ‘guests’ for 4 saw kills in a row and a double with a pulse grenade… I was in.  I regret nothing.

Injustice: God’s Among Us

I didn’t play the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, even though it got very good reviews.  Just not enough time, so it got backlogged and I assumed I’d just pick it up at budget price.  Injustice builds on that same engine/play style with DC comics characters.  The demo is free to download now so I gave it a try.  Played through all three characters, (Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, Batman) and fought against Doomsday.  Feels… fun.  The pause screen with the moves list indicates duration and recovery frames for each move so clearly they’re going for the hardcore fighters, but as just a pick up and play I’d say its as good as Soul Calibur series.  moves are easy to pull off, and you can do really cool looking stuff on screen without having to memorize or line up complex scenarios.  The final game may warrant a buy.

Bioshock 2

Yeah, not Infinite.  I’ve hard Bioshock 2 in my collection and sealed in plastic for a long time now. At least 2 years.  In order to allow myself to play Infinite and other new games, I’m going to clear off some of my back log here.  Bioshock 2 has been dissected pretty well by now by others, but I’ll at least say playing as a Big Daddy from the start and looking for a girl who may be your daughter isn’t exactly evoking the same kind of wonder and sudden power the first game did.  But the atmosphere is still cool, the powers are still fun to throw around.  I haven’t played the original Bioshock since I completed it on August 28, 2007.  I think of it as being one of the best games ever, and not going back is a purposeful act that maintains that memory.

Boom Blox Party

A Wii game, a gift from my brother on my birthday a few years back.  Dawn and I have been playing and its pretty fun, kind of light.  If games like Bioshock are the 1 Hour cable dramas, then Boom Blox is a half hour network sitcom.  Drop in, play for a bit, have some laughs, but not racked with questions and suspense at the end.  Can’t imagine playing alone, this is a multiplayer game only.
